The project consists of 7,570 ft. of aerial
structures extending along the Rapid Rail Line to Dunwoody
Station, north of Atlanta.
The structures carry two trackways and utilize two superstructure
cross-sections, a 30ft.-3in. wide single box girder cross-section
that carries both tracks and 17ft.-3in. wide dual box girders
that carry one track each. The span lengths for the deep box
girders vary from 90 ft. to 140 ft. with a total deck area
of 173,100 sq. ft.
The superstructure is supported by 56 cast-in-place piers
varying from 25 ft. to 50 ft. in height bearing on 100 ton
steel “H” piles, with the exception of six piers
that were founded on rock. The project is located in Dekalb
County on the north side of the metro Atlanta area. The right-of-way
transects several high-end commercial properties and the Georgia
DOT.
The contract required no fewer than 39 temporary easement
activations sequenced throughout the construction schedule.
Construction was activated by 6 notice-to-proceeds issued
by MARTA, with 111 interim completion dates, scheduled within
the 24 month contract time.
The structures were released to MARTA in June 1995, six months
ahead of schedule.
